A lead washer is a flat disk-shaped metal or plastic item with a hole in the center, typically used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener such as a bolt or nut. Washers also serve as spacers, springs (Belleville or wave washer), wear pads, preload indicators and locking devices. They are often coated to reduce friction or to provide lubrication.

Front-load washing machines are easy to use but can become a haven for grime, mold or mildew. Residue from soap, fabric softeners, detergents, water minerals and lint builds up behind the gasket and in the drum, and even in places that can’t be seen. Without proper cleaning, this residue can cause your laundry to smell bad and may make it difficult for your washer to operate properly, wasting energy.

Clean your washer as soon as you notice foul odors, mold stains or mildew. Remove the lid and open the door as wide as you can to access the interior of the washer. If possible, remove the drum and wipe it down with a damp cloth. Spray your cleaner of choice on the gasket/seal and inside the washer door, and wipe it down as well. To prevent smells, mold and mildew from returning to your washer, rinse it out between loads. Also, avoid using pod or pac-style detergents in a high efficiency (HE) washer. These can contain chemicals that are harmful to the machine. Use liquid or powdered HE detergents instead.
