Calcium is a soft, silvery-white alkaline earth metal that is not found in its pure elemental state in nature but exists mainly in compounds. These include limestone (calcium carbonate), gypsum (calcium sulfate) and fluorite (calcium fluoride). It is also the fifth most abundant element in the earth’s crust and, of course, an essential part of our bones and teeth. It was first isolated as an element in 1808 by Cornish chemist Sir Humphry Davy using electrolysis, which uses direct current to separate elements from their natural sources.

He mixed a paste of calcium hydroxide and mercury oxide, placing it between platinum electrodes in an electrolytic cell, as illustrated below. When electricity was passed through the paste, a calcium amalgam formed at the mercury electrode and hydrogen gas escaped from the cell. The mercury was distilled away, leaving calcium in the form of an ion and oxygen in the form of a white gas.

In the form of powder, calcium nitride has the chemical formula Ca3N2. It is a reddish brown crystalline solid that hydrolyzes when it meets water to produce calcium hydroxide and release ammonia. It is soluble in dilute acid and decomposes in alcohol.

has been a long-term supplier and manufacturer of high quality Ca3N2 in China. Our high purity and uniform particle size make it ideal for use in various applications including light-emitting diode (LED) phosphors. If you are interested in purchasing our calcium nitride, please contact us for further details.
