beryllium plates are used in a variety of industrial applications. It is available in a number of different forms including as a pure metal, beryllium oxide, and an alloy with copper, magnesium or aluminum. Beryllium is an extremely strong, light and brittle alkaline earth metal with a silvery-white appearance. It is rare in the Earth’s crust and found in combination with other elements to form natural gemstones such as beryl (aquamarine, emerald and red beryl), chrysoberyl and bertrandite.

This element is most often employed in the manufacture of electronic equipment and sensitive magnetic components due to its high heat capacity and resistance to corrosion. It can also be used in various types of abrasive blasting operations. These activities produce airborne beryllium dust which can be inhaled into the lungs, causing health effects. This is why these types of jobs require appropriate personal protective equipment.

In 1887, Wohler deposited layers of beryllium chloride and potassium in a platinum crucible, producing a gray-black powder which was soluble in alcohol, but insoluble in water. Wohler subsequently heated the mixture with an alcohol lamp, yielding a metallic beryllium which could be hammered or cast into ingots.

American Elements casts all of the rare earth metals and many other advanced materials into rod, bar and plate form as well as a wide variety of machined shapes. In addition, we can produce many of these materials in nanoparticle and organometallic forms. Contact us for more information or to request a quote.
