zinc hydroxide is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula Zn(OH)2. It occurs naturally as 3 rare minerals, wulfingite, ashoverite and sweetite. zinc hydroxide is amphoteric, meaning that it reacts like an acid or a base depending on the substances it is combined with. When zinc hydroxide is exposed to a strong acid, it will dissolve. When it is combined with a strong alkali, such as sodium hydroxide, it will form a precipitate.

The dissolving property of zinc hydroxide is attributed to the fact that the ion is normally surrounded by water ligands. When excess sodium hydroxide is added to the solution, the hydroxide ions reduce the complex to -2 charges, making it soluble. It is also used in medical applications as a high-quality adsorbent for heavy bleeding during surgical procedures. The large bandages that are applied after surgery are coated with it, and they function to engross the blood from the wound.

It is prepared by adding a small amount of sodium hydroxide solution to any zinc salt solution. The resulting solution has a dull white flocculent precipitate and is odorless. The valency of zinc in zinc hydroxide is 2 and the oxidation state is +2. It is slightly soluble in alcohol and slightly soluble in water. When aluminum is added to a solution of zinc hydroxide, it forms a white precipitate that is soluble in the reagent excess and indicates the presence of aluminium. It also reacts with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of ammonia, and ammonium chloride forms a white precipitate of acid-soluble zinc sulfide.
